In “The American Society of Magical Negroes,” the writer-director Kobi Libii’s debut feature film opening March 15, a mysterious group of Black people possess superpowers. But unlike Black Panther or Miles Morales’s Spider-Man, this group doesn’t fight criminals or take on villains. Instead, the members of this society wield their powers only for a very specific purpose: soothing the anxieties of white people. This conceit satirizes the cultural trope of the Magical Negro, in which Black characters in a plot exist solely to aid the white protagonists. By incarnating this trope in the form of a secret society set in present-day America, the film critiques the ways in which Black people continue to be forced into deference toward white people.

"Marvel's Spider-Man 2" broke the record for fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in its opening 24 hours, according to a release. Consumers purchased more than 2.5 million copies of the game, which debuted Oct. 20, breaking PlayStation Studios' record. Sony Interactive Entertainment, which is the parent company of PlayStation Studios, priced the standard version of the game at $69.99 and offers a deluxe edition for $79.99. Only PlayStation 5 users have access to the new "Marvel's Spider-Man 2," since it is exclusive to that console, according to Marvel. The game, developed by Insomniac Games in collaboration with Marvel Games and PlayStation Studios, allows users to play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

A 14-year-old artist got to live his dream when the filmmakers behind the latest "Spider-Man" movie asked him to work on the film. Preston Mutanga made waves earlier this year when he shared a video he made recreating the trailer for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" in the style of LEGO. The 2-minute clip went viral, finding its way to "Spider-Verse" writers and producers Chris Lord and Phil Miller. "It blew us all away, including some of the best animators in the world." When it was decided that the multiverse-hopping film would be adding a LEGO-themed sequence, the filmmakers reached out to Mutanga to offer him the chance to animate it.

The latter attributes were evident in every sparkling and witty minute of 2018’s animated triumph “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which posited a multiverse in which all sorts of different Spider-People existed simultaneously in their own worlds rendered in distinct styles of animation. The script reworked 1960s characters and storylines with heart and comic brilliance, plus one of the craftiest and twistiest plotlines of any comic-book blockbuster.

LAS VEGAS — CinemaCon kicked off Monday with a major announcement from Sony Pictures — its upcoming "Kraven the Hunter" would mark the first R-rated Marvel film produced by the studio.
